I did use a tougher, fast-drying latex called "poly latex false face." it still softens in water and is quite flexible, but has a slightly different personality than the basic natural latex.

my hair was 2 inches long, but completely mixed in with the layers of rubber paint, until it was slick enough to look bald. maybe 15 coats of thick rubber. thickest coating to date.
