Grand country estates tend to develop their own traditions over the centuries, and here in Langstonedale needless to say most of the traditions are messy ones. One of which is that any bride must be able to give a good account of herself in a messy forfeit game of scissors, paper, stone, while wearing her wedding dress. Teaching these skills usually falls to a senior member of the household staff, and so it was that Evelyne the cook, mistress absolute of all she surveys in the kitchens, and in charge of both the eating food and the wearing food for the Hall, takes young Modesty down to the dungeons for her lessons in bridal messiness.

Appropriate to the occasion, Evelyne wears a beautiful iridescent green bridesmaids dress, with white rose detail, while Modesty wears a truly stunning long sleeved ivory wedding gown, in heavy satin, with beautiful detailing in white. Both ladies look truly lovely, and look forward with enthusiasm to what is to come!

Cake sitting is the first order of priority, as Modesty lowers her dainty behind into a carefully thawed double chocolate gateaux, and her glorious gown gains a large chocolate splodge at the back. Next, Evelyne is draped in a pretty string of beads, but only after they've been coated in custard.

From here on the two girls' dresses suffer an increasingly messy fate, slices of gateaux are dropped inside and smeared over fronts, black treacle is poured on, rice pudding and custard goes everywhere. Steadily and unstoppably Modesty's beautiful ivory gown, and Evelyne's bridesmaid finery, are reduced to a wet, sticky, sloppy mess.

Once both ladies are well covered, they abandon the game and just set about each other with the remaining messes, ensuring that not a single clean spot remains anywhere on their outfits.
