True story: a little while before I moved away from Massachusetts and my ocean, every night for a while as soon as I fell asleep, I would open my eyes as a great white shark! It started off the coast of Cape Cod (and great whites were not thought to be in the area then, although now it's one of the most popular places for them!) and eventually started moving south along the coast. Each night it would pick up further down the coast.

I was watching the herons, because if they flew away, I was getting company real soon... and that's not always a good or safe thing.
